Brief Project Description:
Once an icon on Sydney city streets, trams have returned to ply the transport routes of the CBD. The Sydney Light rail services looked to provide stops in the CBD and Inner West locations, so naturally the grand old Central Station colonnade was ear marked to return to servicing light rail. As the hub of the Sydney rail network, the Light rail stop at Central will disburse thousands of Sydneysiders every day.
DSP’s involvement?
AECOM was tasked with establishing the load rating of the existing suspended concourse ramp and platform and asked DSP to provide a survey accurate point cloud and BIM model of the colonnade to start the project with the precise parameters needed to move forward. The laser scan and subsequent digital twin model encompassed the upper colonnade and the Eddie Avenue level of columned walkway.
How did DSP add value to the project? :
With the task of adapting a 21st century rail car in a 20th century colonnade, it was vital that the existing conditions data was accurate, and the proposed structural loads could be accommodated. The high-definition laser scan point cloud provided the precision required, as well as a vast field of contextual data to enable a detailed model to be built for further design work.
Technology & Capability
DSP are at the forefront of modern technology to capture field data, utilising the latest Leica and Trimble equipment to offer accurate and reliable results.
Such equipment includes high accuracy Total Stations with robotic operation, Laser Scanners, GPS with CORSNET capability, submillimetre digital Levels and data collection loggers for asset management/collection.
A professional suite of office software is employed for processing field data, from in-house developed least squares software and applications to commercial software packages such as Civilcad, 12d model, Bentley MX Road, Trimble Realworks, AutoCAD and Autodesk RECAP. DSP are able to offer a product to suit our clients’ needs.
With a fleet of vehicles compliant to the latest OH&S safety requirements, DSP can operate in all environments. All staff are trained and carry the relevant competencies including Rail Industry Worker, Rail Safety Worker, OH&S general induction for construction work, RMS Yellow Card and Substation Entry.
